How to Write a Letter for a Friend: Example Birthday Letter

If you are new to letter writing, even a simple task like writing a letter to your friend may appear daunting to you. You may even start thinking, what has letter writing got to do in this age of the internet? In a world of fast messaging apps, letter writing makes no sense. Someone may even think that letter writing is an art lost in time but rest assured that letter writing is still very much alive, and it is not that hard.

People write their emails in letter form; for example, they will write a letter to your friend (or their friend). Friends have a certain casualness with each other. Even if you write a letter to a friend that is horrible, what is the worst thing that can happen, eh? He might laugh at you, or you can all laugh together at a party. It can even become a memorable part of your time together, and when you look back, you may smile at that time and its silliness. Life is short, and what is the fun in it if we do not make any mistakes? In the long run, the "special" parts of your life are the most memorable. The ordinary ones are always forgotten somewhere in the catacombs of time. So, in short, write a letter. It will be fun.

Let's get started and see how we can write a memorable and a good letter.

Table of Contents

Writing an introduction is the hardest part of letter writing. You are stuck, and you don't know how to start. You can start with "Hi Sam!" or "Hi Tanya!" or whatever your friend's name is, or you can start with a "Dear Friend" if you are close. Whatever you like.

One trick to starting a letter quickly is to not think about what your friend will think when he will read your letter. Just think of your friend as an imaginary being in the vast canvas of the universe rowing his boat in the silent oceans of space and making a tune. (Forget that it is a vacuum out there and no one can breathe. After all, it is just the infinite canvas of your mind, not actual space).

Then you can ask them about their health: “How are you?” or “How are you doing today”, are good lines. You probably remember them if you have written any letter in school. You can even start with, “You know what happened yesterday…", and insert some exciting things about what happened yesterday or the day before or last week for that matter. If nothing happened that is worth writing about, you can take the ideas from some Netflix or Amazon season episode that you watched today. You are sure to find preposterous and some pretty crazy stuff there that will neatly fit in the introduction.

Main Body

Now comes the main body of the letter. You have to enlarge the letter. Add more words to it because a letter can’t be just a ‘Hi’ and a sentence. It is acceptable as a note, but seriously, a letter needs to be a teeny tiny bit longer. We have to put more words into it. We have to build it brick by brick like some construction worker, working day in and out. Phew!

Worry not, it is not that hard. A letter is just a few words making sense with lots of non-sense as decoration, cannon fodder, etc. Just talk about why you want to write this weird letter. You can write about bushes outside your home or a sheep in some farm you saw coming home, and now you are thinking about it no matter how hard you try to erase the image, or about a strange-looking dude on the street you saw yesterday, and how he came in your dream last night. It can be anything as long as it makes sense (or no sense for that matter). You can go outside. Breathe in the fresh air, look at the trees, the garden, the moon, or the road with its street lamps, and think about the uselessness and meaninglessness of life and how writing a letter will never help that feeling. But you have to write the letter anyway. Why? Because you just have to. Things in this world are like this, set in some nonsensical, random, stupid, unwritten rule-book, and you have to follow them and write a letter.

Letter Writing Topics

Anyways, here are some ideas that can help you in writing a letter to your friend:

  • Write a letter to your friend inviting him to your birthday party.
  • Write a letter to your friend to spend the summer vacation with you.
  • Write a letter to your friend, congratulating him on his success in the examination.
  • Write a letter to your friend about holidays.

Last Paragraph

Here comes the goodbye. Phew. It is almost over. Or you can write another paragraph and another and another if you are bored and have nothing better to do. No one is going to stop you. Your friend will not mind, I will not, and you certainly will not either. Everyone will be happy. But you have to write the last paragraph and end it. End the letter to your friend. End the endlessly boring process of writing the letter. Just ask him what he will be doing tomorrow, what he likes to do on holidays etc. and then with a love or a bye, you are done.

A Simple letter for a friend

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing quite well. I am sure you are. I am also good, and very happy here. I was feeling nostalgic today and thought I should write a letter to you.

Summer is going fine. When days are good, everything passes quickly. You look back and see that a day is gone, a week is gone, and the whole month is just gone in a few moments. It has been only a few days that you left, but everything has started feeling different. The trees don’t look the same, the sky has changed, and the whole world seems duller.

I like to play basketball in the evening with the boys. Last time, you said I was not improving much in my game and should change how I play. I have tried. The team is excited to see me improve. They will probably include me in the upcoming match next month if I keep improving.

How are your days going? How are you spending your summer? I would love to hear what you are doing. Hope to see you soon.

Best regards,

A letter for a friend inviting him to join your birthday party

Hi Sam,

May has arrived and my birthday is near. I want to organise a big birthday celebration. The last few months have been hectic with exams and all the other stuff. I think we all need a little relaxation.

I have invited all our mutual friends. Johnny has started to practise on piano and Alice is learning to dance. If nothing it will be fun to see those too make a fool of themselves. (Just kidding)

I hope you will come.

Yours sincerely,
